Viktor E. Frankl
The call of the leader is to invest in people - themselves and those in their care - so they find meaning in their work and give their highest level of contribution to the world. In this way, leadership is an ongoing act of deep learning and intentional service for the sake of both purpose and performance.
There is nothing more frustrating than wasted potential. We’ve all experienced it in ourselves or seen it happen in others - -
All are equally disappointing. Greatness could have happened, but it just…didn’t.
There is also nothing more exciting than the raw energy of potential. That moment when you meet a person or find an opportunity that you know could take things to the next level.
This is where leaders have a critical choice. They can leave potential untapped or they can invest in what matters most - the people who bring potential to life.
At the core, people want two things - to be good at something and for their work to mean something. To experience the energy of performance and the depth of purpose. One without the other is only half the story.
Performance disconnected from purpose is unsustainable over the long haul, eventually breeds mediocrity and is ultimately more about the leader’s ego. Purpose without performance is filled with good intentions but often leads to lack of progress, wasted resources and disillusioned people.
Transforming potential into purpose + performance requires intention, strategy, patience and wisdom. We've seen firsthand that the effort is worth it. It's the reason we exist. There is nothing else we'd rather do, and we're so grateful for the opportunity.
